Explore Science by Doing It
 
In Grade 1, students discover the science of plants, sound, light, animals, and communication through playful experiments, music, games, and hands-on challenges. They will:
🍃 Make leaf rubbings using crayons, leaves, and paper, then collect and sort leaves according to their observable traits.
🥁 Make their own clap sticks from Popsicle sticks and use them to keep a beat with Bobby’s Eagle Song.
🎵 Make a rubber band ukulele and experiment with plucking the strings to discover that vibrating strings create sound.
🎶 Make a drinking-straw kazoo and investigate how vibrations produce different sounds.
🌑 Explore a dark box using clues and cue cards to make observations and discover what they can learn even when light is limited.
🦇 Create a baby bat from salt dough, give it a pretend medical checkup, and complete a baby bat birth certificate.
🔦 Go on a light scavenger hunt to discover which materials allow light to pass through and which ones block it.
🔍 Explore translucent materials and use paper to uncover clues and solve jokes.
🥁 Play “Hot and Cold” with a twist, using a drum to communicate with a treasure seeker—loud and fast beats mean “hot,” while slow and soft beats mean “cold.”
 
These aren’t just activities to watch or read about. Students create, sort, listen, observe, experiment, communicate, and make discoveries for themselves. Each unit turns science into an experience children can see, hear, touch, and explore—making learning exciting, memorable, and fun.
