Explore Science by Doing It
In Kindergarten, students begin discovering how animals, weather, sunlight, materials, and forces affect the world around them through playful, hands-on investigations. They will:
- 🐋 Make water temperatures just right for animals by mixing water and ice to match the preferred temperatures of an orca whale, bonnethead shark, and manatee.
- 🐦 Go on an animal-home hunt to look for bird nests, squirrel holes, ant hills, and other signs of animal homes and ask, “What animals live around us?”
- 🧦☀️ Find out how warm their socks get by placing thermometers under light- and dark-colored socks or different colored pieces of paper and measuring how much they heat up in sunlight.
- 🌿 Compare how different materials warm in sunlight by touching and observing grass, rocks, sand, dirt, trees, metal, and plastic, then creating a color map to record their discoveries.
- 🍫 Build a shade structure using blocks, LEGO-style materials, or STEMTaught supplies and design a shady place that protects chocolate from melting.
- 🌦️ Keep a weather journal by observing daily weather conditions and recording the temperature at the same time each day to discover how weather and temperature change.
- 🚗 Explore forces through guided play with Blocky cars, discovering how pushes and pulls affect motion.
- 🔵 Experiment with marbles to investigate how forces can make objects move, stop, and change direction.
- 🏀 Explore forces with bouncy balls through playful experiments that reveal what happens when objects collide with surfaces and each other.
These aren’t just activities to watch or read about. Young scientists play, observe, measure, build, compare, test, and make discoveries for themselves. Each unit turns everyday experiences into opportunities to explore science—helping children develop curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning from the very beginning.
